Rebellion intensifies in TMC, MP Koel Mallik resigns
After the defeat in the West Bengal elections, Mamata Banerjee’s troubles are showing no signs of ending. There are continuous reports of rebellion within Trinamool Congress (TMC) and now another big name has been added to this list. Rajya Sabha MP, famous Tollywood actress Koel Mallick was sent to Rajya Sabha by Mamata Banerjee three months ago in April. Whose real name is Rukmini Mallik, has resigned from Rajya Sabha.
On Thursday (July 16, 2026), he officially resigned from his post by writing a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan. However, she had already announced her resignation before this. But Koyal did not give any reason for his resignation in the letter. Koyal is not the only one who has left Mamata. Before him, three more TMC Rajya Sabha MPs Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik have resigned from the party.
The interesting thing is that these three not only resigned from the membership of Rajya Sabha, but also resigned from all the posts of the party and joined BJP. Not only this, all three also filed nomination again for Rajya Sabha on BJP ticket. Now there is a discussion in Bengal politics that Koyal can also go on the same path, because after her resignation, she was seen at the house of BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav in Delhi, due to which the speculations about her joining BJP have intensified.
With Koyal’s resignation, the number of TMC MPs resigning from Rajya Sabha has now increased to four. Earlier the party had 13 Rajya Sabha MPs, which has now reduced to only 9. Meanwhile, another faction within the party has come to the fore. On Wednesday (July 15, 2026), old TMC leader Madan Mitra also left Mamata and joined Ritabrata Banerjee’s ‘rebel camp’. Madan Mitra had cited Abhishek Banerjee’s working style as the reason for his rebellion. It is clear that the party is now divided into many parts. On one hand, 20 rebel MPs under the leadership of Kakoli Ghosh had merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), now the ‘real TMC’ faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has been formed.
