After the issue of alleged remarks made regarding attire was raised in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, a clarification was given in the House. CPI(M) MP John Brittas had objected to a member calling him 'Lungiwala'. He had described it as a matter related to the dignity, prestige and respect of the House. After this, BJP MP Sushmita Dev clarified in the House that she did not comment on any person, state or its culture and attire.
Sushmita Dev said in the Rajya Sabha that she wants to put it on the record of the House that no message should be sent from the House that any member wants to divide India on cultural or religious basis.
She said, “I myself come from Assam. I am a Bengali from Assam. I have seen various states in the North-East, where we wear different types of dresses and costumes, hence neither I nor any member has ever made any objectionable comment on the attire of any state. I wanted to put this on the record of the House.”
Sushmita Dev said that this issue was raised by member John Brittas. He said that if Brittas feels that he should say something to him personally or talk to him in this regard, then he is ready for it. “If they feel I should contact them and say something, I would be happy to do so. I love the people of Kerala, the Northeast and Karnataka,” she said.
He said that this entire matter should not be seen as a division between any region, language, culture or dress.
At the same time, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha JP Nadda suggested both the members to hold talks in his chamber. Trying to calm the matter, House leader and Union Minister JP Nadda said that he invites both the members to come to his chamber and talk. This will remove mutual confusion and misunderstanding.
Nadda said, “On this subject, I would like to make only one request that if both the members come to my chamber, then we will be able to clarify the confusion and misunderstanding that has happened between us and good and cordial relations can be established between the two of you.”
He said for both the members that mutual misunderstandings can be resolved after presenting their respective views in the House. Nadda stressed on maintaining a cordial atmosphere. Earlier in the Rajya Sabha, CPI(M) MP John Brittas had raised the issue of a member allegedly calling him 'lungi waala'.
He said that he is raising this issue with a heavy heart, because it is not just his personal matter, but is related to the dignity and prestige of the House. Brittas had said, “It is with a heavy heart that I am raising this issue, because it is a question of dignity, prestige and respect of this House. This is not an issue of any one party, but of all the parties.”
