A mosque was demolished near Saharanpur District Collectorate in Uttar Pradesh. After the action taken following the order of the District Court, information has come to light that after the demolition of the mosque, a well was found under the debris. This has started new discussions.
While removing the debris of the mosque, a well about 20 feet deep and one and a half meter wide was found. This well was covered with stone construction. It has been told that the help of experts of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will be taken to investigate the historical importance of this well.
The administration says that this mosque located in the Saharanpur District Collectorate complex was built illegally on government land. The administration demolished the mosque on September 6 amid heavy police security after the local court rejected the petition of the mosque's management committee. Earlier, the city magistrate had also imposed a fine of Rs 6.41 crore for alleged illegal occupation of 315 square meter government land.
This well was found when JCB removed the debris after demolition. The administration has currently kept the well safe and police has been deployed in the area. How old the well is and what is its historical importance will be known after inspection by ASI.
Meanwhile, Mutawalli of the mosque Tanveer Ahmed has alleged that the demolition action was not done as per the rules. According to him, the city magistrate had ordered to vacate the place in July; But, the mosque management had approached the court against this. The demolition took place just days after the District Court rejected the appeal on September 2. The management committee of the mosque has expressed readiness to challenge this action in the High Court.
