Yoga has become very important in today's busy life. It relieves us from stress and makes us healthy. Makarasana is one of the many asanas of yoga. This is not just a comfortable posture, but also a great way to get relief from stress, fatigue and back pain.
'Makarasana' is a Sanskrit word, which is made up of two words 'Makara' and 'Asana'. Here 'Makar' means crocodile and 'Aasan' means posture. By doing this asana, back and waist pain reduces and the body gets relief.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, doing Makarasana provides relaxation to the muscles of the body. Especially it removes stiffness of back, waist and shoulders. It is also considered beneficial for the respiratory system. This yoga asana promotes mental balance and physical health.
This is a very beneficial yoga asana for the spine. Makarasana helps in maintaining a balanced structure of the spine and increases its flexibility. It is especially beneficial for those suffering from back pain, slipped disc or 'spinal tension'. Its regular practice makes the spine strong and healthy.
Makarasana is also called 'relaxing pose' and its biggest benefit is seen on our nervous system. In fact, while doing Makarasana, when we lie down on our stomach and take deep and slow breaths, our parasympathetic nervous system becomes active. It is also called the 'rest and digest' system of the body. This reduces the level of stress hormone cortisol in the body and calms the mind.
By calming the nervous system, the quality of sleep improves and the problem of insomnia goes away. Reducing stress also helps in controlling high blood pressure. This asana should be avoided in case of serious injury, recent surgery and pregnancy.
