Spain High Speed Train Crash

There has been a massive collision between two trains in Central Spain. About 39 people have died in this accident. Spain's rail system operator ADIF said the collision occurred in the province of Toledo on Wednesday morning. According to TVE report, the accident happened between two high-speed trains going in the same direction and one collided with the rear of the other, causing two of its carriages to derail.

The mayor of the nearby city of Urda, Manuel Galan, told Spanish state broadcaster TVE that several passengers were injured. Civil protection officials have asked their town hall to prepare a sports pavilion for the treatment of the injured. “Traffic on the Madrid-Andalucia high-speed rail line has been halted after two trains collided,” Adif said in a message on Twitter on Wednesday.

Renfe and Iryo trains collided shortly after 9 a.m. (0800 GMT), causing two carriages of the Iryo train to derail, a government spokesman for the Castilla-la-Mancha region said. He said that the reasons for the accident and the number of injured are still being ascertained.

A similar accident had happened 9 months ago also.

The collision occurred between high-speed trains of the same operator, on the same line, as it did nine months ago. 46 people lost their lives in this accident. The accident took place in January, in which a train derailed near Adamuz in Cordoba province and collided with another train coming from the opposite direction. These accidents have sparked a debate over the level of investment made in railway maintenance in recent years.
