Sudhanshu Trivedi's taunt, Indi alliance's mock parliament is just drama!

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday lauded the findings of the World Bank's 'India Poverty and Equity Brief'. The party said that this report has made fun of the 'mock parliament' of the Indi alliance. The opposition alliance had organized a 'public impeachment' event against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over irregularities in the election process and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.

Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the report shows that the Narendra Modi-led government has succeeded in lifting a large population out of poverty.

Pointing to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, he said that after failing in its intentions of spreading anarchy in India, Congress organized a 'mock Parliament' i.e. a fake drama to please its spoiled prince. However, at the same time of this drama, a concrete truth came before the country from the World Bank.

The World Bank has stated in its 2025 report that between 2011 and 2023, India has achieved great success in eradicating multidimensional poverty. The report states that a decade ago, more than 27 percent of people in India were living in extreme poverty, whereas today this figure has come down to only 2.6 percent.

The BJP MP said the World Bank's October 2026 'Poverty and Equality Report' for India also said that the share of the population living below the 'lower-middle-income' poverty line of $4.20 per day is expected to decline from 57.7 per cent in 2011 to 16.1 per cent in 2023.

He said that the truth is that the BJP government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not only committed to improving the standard of living of every Indian, but is also succeeding in it. We have achieved great success in eliminating multidimensional poverty and this has also been acknowledged in the World Bank report.

Referring to the 'Gini Index' released by the World Bank in August 2025 for economic equality, Sudhanshu Trivedi said that India's score in it has been 22.5. This meant that India was ranked fourth among the countries with the most economic equality in the world. At that time, economic inequality in India was the lowest among G7 and G20 countries.

Taking a dig at the opposition leader, Trivedi asked what to say about Rahul Gandhi, who in August 2013 had said that poverty is a mindset, implying that poverty is only a state of mind and the rest will take care of itself. Dr. Manmohan Singh had also once said that money does not grow on trees.

The BJP MP said there was a “huge and glaring difference” between the vision of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and the thinking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. By treating poverty as just a mindset, the Congress-led UPA government kept a large population of India trapped in abject poverty.

However, it is clear from the World Bank report that the 27.6 percent people who were below the poverty line at that time (during the Congress rule), have now come out of it. That's why I think these World Bank figures have made a mockery of the fake Parliament.

Sudhanshu Trivedi said that on one hand the BJP led NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi is working to eradicate poverty from the country, while on the other hand the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi is now engaged in spreading anarchy after its failed attempts to remove Prime Minister Modi from power.
