Singapore and Japan are the only Asian representatives among the world’s 10 safest countries to visit this year, reflecting their strong public safety records and low crime rates, according to the Global Peace Index.

Singapore ranked 8th, down one place from last year, while Japan jumped three places to 10th.

Released by the Institute for Economics & Peace this month, the annual index assesses 163 countries and territories based on 23 indicators across three broad categories: safety and security, levels of conflict, and militarization.

Iceland was named the world’s safest country for the 19th consecutive year after achieving a score of 1.161 on a scale ranging from 1 to 5, where lower scores indicate higher levels of peace.

New Zealand ranked second and Switzerland came in third.

Strict laws, low crime rates and a safe environment have fostered and reinforced a strong sense of public order in Singapore.

Japan, which welcomed a record 42.7 million foreign tourists last year, is always praised for its strict law enforcement and low crime rates.
