2017,2022 and now 2027, years changed but same story of rebellion in Punjab Congress

Once again rebellion is being seen in Punjab Congress. This time, senior Punjab Congress leader and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi has shown rebellious attitude. Congress had made him the president of the campaign committee of Punjab Congress but he was to become the state president. After this they started a rebellion and demanded the removal of Raja Vading from the post of state president. Along with this, he also called a meeting of his group’s leaders at his home on July 3. After this meeting the market of discussions has become heated.

A similar atmosphere was seen in Punjab Congress even before the assembly elections in 2022. Just a few months before the 2022 elections, the Congress Party had removed Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of CM due to factionalism and after that Charanjit Singh Channi was made the CM. Earlier, to convince Navjot Singh Siddu, he was made the state president. However, when Channi became CM, he got only a few days’ time and elections were announced.

Channi was adamant on declaring CM face

In 2022, Channi got the tenure of only a few days. After this the party had to face elections. During this time also there was a conflict between Charanjit Singh Channi and the party high command. The party wanted to enter the electoral fray without a CM face but Channi opposed it. As state president, Navjot Singh Siddu was a strong contender for the post of CM. However, Channi did not accept this. He put pressure on the party high command and asked to declare himself the CM face. After this, Rahul Gandhi himself declared Channi as the CM candidate.

Captain had opened the front since 2017

This is not the first incident of rebellion against the state president in Punjab Congress. Earlier, before the 2017 elections, Captain Amarinder Singh had also rebelled against the party president and he was successful in it. Pratap Singh Bajwa was the party president in 2015 but Captain Amarinder Singh himself wanted to become the president. The Captain had put complete pressure on the Congress high command to remove Bajwa. He had even threatened to leave the party and join BJP or form a separate party.

Bajwa had stepped down despite Rahul Gandhi’s support

Pratap Singh Bajwa had the support of Rahul Gandhi. However, even Rahul Gandhi could not keep him on the post of state president. Even Rahul Gandhi had to bow down to the Captain’s stubbornness. There was a lot of fighting in Punjab Congress and both the leaders threw mud at each other. After this, the party handed over the command to Captain Amarinder Singh in place of Bajwa and announced his name as the CM face of Congress. In this election, Congress party came to power after 10 years.

factionalism before 2027

The factionalism of the Congress Party has once again come to the fore in Punjab. Elections will be held early next year but the party leaders are not ready to work together. Charanjit Singh Channi seems to be unwilling to accept anything less than the party president or CM face. Along with this, many other leaders have to adjust the party. The party wants to go to the elections without a CM face.
