Sarah’s Oilwhich is inspired by the 2014 book Searching for Sarah Rector: The Richest Black Girl in America, is available to watch now on Prime Video. The movie is directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh, from a screenplay written by Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh and Cyrus. Alongside Levi, the movie also stars Naya Desir-Johnson, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Garret Dillahunt.
The movie follows the story of Sarah, a descendant of the Creek Freedman, who is granted 160 acres of land in Oklahoma. While initially considered to be worthless land, Sarah discovers oil on the land, which leads to her having to navigate greedy oil sharks, corrupt officials, and other men looking to take advantage of her.
“In the early 1900s, young Sarah Rector believes there’s oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted in Indian Territory. As greedy sharks close in, Sarah turns to family, friends, and some Texas wildcatters to maintain control of her oil-rich land, eventually becoming one of the first female African American millionaires,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
Following its release, Sarah’s Oil earned $12 million at the box office, and despite the low box office, was well received. The movie has a score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with most reviews being positive.
