Shreyas Iyer broke Rohit Sharma’s record, took over the T20 captaincy of Team India after the longest gap.

India’s new T20 captain Shreyas Iyer made a big record in his name as soon as he made his captaincy debut against Ireland. He became the player to command Team India after captaining in the maximum number of T20 matches and left Rohit Sharma behind in this matter.

Shreyas Iyer Captaincy debut: The first match of the two-match T20 series between India and Ireland is being played in Belfast. With this match, the Indian team also got a new captain in T20 International. Shreyas Iyer, who is commanding the team in place of Suryakumar Yadav, took the field as captain for the first time in this format.

This match was special for Shreyas Iyer in many ways. He made a big record in his name as soon as he debuted as captain. After captaining the most number of T20 matches, Iyer has become the player to hold the T20 International captaincy of the Indian team. In this matter he left behind Rohit Sharma’s record.

Got the captaincy of Team India after 114 T20 matches

Keeping the future in mind, BCCI has handed over the captaincy of the Indian T20 team to Shreyas Iyer after the T20 World Cup 2026. The special thing was that Iyer came to play T20 International match after 936 days and appeared on the field as captain in the very first match. Shreyas had earlier captained in 114 matches in various T20 tournaments. With this, he became the first player to take command of India’s T20 team after gaining captaincy experience in maximum number of T20 matches. Earlier this record was in the name of Rohit Sharma, who captained the Indian team for the first time after captaining in 80 T20 matches.

Rohit and Virat are also behind in this list

After captaining the most number of T20 matches, Shreyas Iyer has now reached the top in the list of players who have captained the Indian T20 team. He took command of Team India after captaining in 114 T20 matches. After him, the names of Rohit Sharma (80), Virat Kohli (72), KL Rahul (42), Rishabh Pant (30) and Shikhar Dhawan (21) are included. This record shows that Shreyas had gained a lot of captaincy experience before reaching the captaincy of the Indian team.

Third oldest debut captain in T20 captaincy

Shreyas Iyer captained the Indian T20 team for the first time at the age of 31 years and 202 days. With this, he became the third oldest captain of India in this format, who took the responsibility of captaincy for the first time. Shikhar Dhawan is at the first place in this list, who captained the T20 team for the first time at the age of 35 years 232 days. Suryakumar Yadav (33 years 70 days) is in second place, while Shreyas Iyer has reached the third place. Rohit Sharma (30 years 234 days) and KL Rahul (30 years 143 days) are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in this list.
