3 new ‘plugged-in hybrid’ SUV cars to be launched in India soon! find out

The ‘plug-in hybrid’ technology that has taken the European and North American markets by storm in the last decade is now all set to set foot in India as well. So far in India this technology was mainly limited to expensive luxury cars only. However, 3 new plug-in hybrid SUVs will be launched in India in the coming months. Interestingly, all these cars have been developed in collaboration with Chinese automakers or on their platforms, making this one of the most cost-effective PHEVs in India.

1. JSW MG’520‘ (MG 520)

JSW MG Motor India is all set to launch a new SUV in the segment above its popular Hector and Hector Plus, codenamed ‘520’. This new three-row family SUV will be offered in both plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants. The car is based on the ‘Wuling Starlight 560’ and will directly compete with Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari in the Indian market.

Engine: It will be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 105 hp and an electric motor producing 194 hp.

Range: It will get a 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack, which will give a range of up to 125 km on electric-only mode.

2. JSW motors SUV

JSW Group’s newly independent automotive arm ‘JSW Motors’ is set to enter the Indian market with a D-segment SUV based on Chinese automaker Chery’s ‘Jetour Traveler C-DM’. Taking on the Toyota Fortuner, the dashing SUV will arrive in India in the form of spare parts from China and will be assembled at JSW’s upcoming factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The car is likely to be launched around September or October 2026.

Engine: It will get a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a setup of two electric motors, generating a total power of 375 hp.

Range: The LFP battery with a capacity of 27.2 kWh will allow the car to run more than 100 km on just charging without petrol.

3. BYD seal you (BYD Seal U)

Chinese electric car giant BYD will launch its first plug-in hybrid D-segment SUV ‘BYD Seal U’ in India. It is a premium SUV primarily designed for comfortable on-road travel. The car will also be imported from China and assembled at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and could hit the market in the third quarter of the year.

Engine: In India, the car will be offered with a combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a single electric motor.

Range: It will have an 18.3 kWh LFP battery pack, which will facilitate a journey of up to 126 kilometers on electric power only. This car will give a total combined range of over 1,000 km.
