Srinagar: A major accident was averted in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, 25 May 2026. There was a technical glitch in the famous cable car system here. Due to this, about 300 tourists got stuck in the air. As soon as the Gondola stopped suddenly, fear and panic spread among the people. Many cabins were left hanging in the air between the mountains.
Army and police took charge
According to media reports, as soon as the news of the incident was received, the army, police and local administration came into action. Teams of 9 Raj Rifles of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and administration together started a major rescue operation. Tangmarg Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Tehsildar also reached the spot and supervised the rescue operation.
Children and women trapped in the cabin got scared
According to eyewitnesses, the children and women sitting in the cabin were badly scared due to the sudden stoppage of the Gondola. Several videos surfaced in which tourists were seen waiting for help inside cabins hanging in the air. Below, the rescue team was busy planning to get them out safely.
Officials said, ‘situation under control’
Regarding this incident, the administration said that the situation is completely under control. All safety rules are being followed during the rescue. An official said that due to a technical glitch the service had to be stopped for some time. The teams became active immediately and the stranded tourists were evacuated on priority. Technical experts were also deployed to fix the problems so that the service could start soon.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office said the government was monitoring the situation. All cabins are safe. Trained teams are evacuating the stranded tourists safely. There is no need to panic. The situation is completely under control.
