3rd Made-In-India BMW 420cc Twin Launching Soon: It’s A Fully Faired Sportsbike

BMW Motorrad will reveal its third motorcycle based on the new 420cc twin-cylinder platform on October 15, and this time it is a fully faired sportsbike. The model is expected to be called the BMW F 450 RR and will join the already launched F 450 GS adventure bike and the recently revealed F 450 R roadster.

The teaser shows a low, fully faired motorcycle with winglets, a raised windscreen and styling that clearly takes inspiration from the larger S 1000 RR.

An India launch has not yet been formally announced, but the entire 450 platform is closely tied to TVS Motor’s manufacturing base at Hosur. The F 450 GS is already made there, and the RR has also been seen testing locally.

BMW has not released the F 450 RR’s specifications yet, but the mechanical base is expected to be shared with the F 450 GS and F 450 R.

That means a 420cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine producing around 48hp at 8,750rpm and 43Nm at 6,750rpm. BMW could alter the gearing or engine calibration for the sportsbike, but there is no confirmation of higher peak output.

The RR is expected to use 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, road-focused tyres and a more aggressive riding position than the GS. The teaser also shows fairing-mounted winglets and a front brake layout similar to the recently revealed F 450 R.

Equipment could include the same 6.5-inch TFT display, multiple riding modes, traction control and bi-directional quickshifter offered across the platform. Higher variants may also get adjustable suspension and BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch system. Those details remain expected rather than confirmed until the October 15 reveal.

The significance of the 450 family is that BMW is again using India as a global production base for its smaller motorcycles.

The F 450 GS is manufactured by TVS Motor at Hosur and costs Rs 4.70 lakh to Rs 5.30 lakh ex-showroom. BMW and TVS have worked together since 2013 and have already produced more than two lakh motorcycles under their partnership.

The F 450 RR should also be produced on the same manufacturing base if BMW follows the platform strategy already established with the GS.

That creates room for relatively competitive pricing by BMW standards. Earlier estimates have placed the fully faired bike somewhere around Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh ex-showroom, although BMW has not announced an official target.

The obvious rival is the Aprilia RS 457, which has set a strong benchmark for locally manufactured twin-cylinder sportsbikes. The Kawasaki Ninja 500 is another competitor, although its imported positioning makes it considerably more expensive.

The BMW’s likely advantage will be electronics and brand value. Its challenge will be keeping weight and price under control.

The F 450 GS already produces the 48hp allowed at the upper end of the European A2 licence category, so outright power is unlikely to be the RR’s main differentiator. Chassis tuning, aerodynamics and riding position will matter more.

It also gives BMW a much more complete entry-level range than it had with the old 310 family. The GS covers adventure touring, the F 450 R handles street riding, and the RR gives the platform a proper sportsbike. October 15 should tell us how far BMW has gone beyond simply wrapping the same mechanical package in bodywork.
