40 years of brilliant service… General Upendra Dwivedi became emotional at the time of farewell, Lieutenant General Dheeraj Seth took command.

General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired from the post of Indian Army Chief after more than 40 years of glorious service, has given a big statement regarding future security challenges and military modernization. He stressed that future wars will focus on more integrated, joint and coordinated military operations, so the direction of the armed forces must be completely clear. Their basic mantra is, “Together we see, together we decide and we act together.”

General Dheeraj Seth becomes 31st Army Chief

General Dheeraj Seth took charge as the 31st Army Chief on Tuesday. He has been given this responsibility in place of General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired today after more than four decades of service. General Dheeraj Seth is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla and was commissioned into the Armed Corps in December 1986. During an illustrious military career spanning nearly four decades, he has wide-ranging experience in operational, strategic, capability development and institutional areas. He has made significant contributions to the combat capability of the Indian Army and its reforms.

Senior army officer General Dwivedi, who retired on Tuesday, was given a ‘guard of honour’ at a formal farewell ceremony held in the lawn of ‘South Block’. On this occasion, he told the media persons, “Today, as I am completing my tenure as Army Chief, I feel extremely grateful, proud and satisfied. The journey from Sainik School till now has been very wonderful.”

The strength of the army is the unwavering trust of soldiers and citizens.

General Dwivedi, who will take over as the 30th Army Chief in June 2024, said that the Indian Army does not get its strength from any one individual but from the unwavering trust of its soldiers, commanders, ex-servicemen, families and citizens of the country. Before the farewell ceremony, he visited the National War Memorial and paid tribute to the brave sons of the country by offering floral tributes. The Army lauded his unwavering dedication by sharing pictures of this emotional moment on ‘X’.

‘New normal’ established through ‘Operation Snow Leopard’ and ‘Operation Vermillion’

General Dwivedi told reporters that in the last two years, the Indian Army has continuously strengthened its operational preparedness on all fronts. The deployment of the Indian Army under ‘Operation Snow Leopard’ is very strong and alert. The Army has performed its duty with full seriousness, a vivid example of which is ‘Operation Sindoor’. He said that during ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched in May 2025 in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Army, Navy and Air Force have established a ‘new normal’ in the security of the country by demonstrating unique coordination, common thinking and solidarity.

General Dheeraj Seth’s tenure

General officers have held command in a variety of positions in diverse operational environments. He has commanded an armed regiment in the desert area, an armed brigade in the western theater and an anti-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, one of the premier strike formations of the Indian Army. After this he served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area and handled formal responsibilities in important national and international military events.

After promotion to the rank of Army Commander, the officer took charge of the South Western Command and Southern Command. He has the rare honor of commanding two operational army commands and overseeing strategic operations in key theaters for more than two and a half years. He has held a number of key staff and strategic positions that have had a significant impact on operational planning, force management and capability development. The General Officer, known for his contribution to the modernization of the Army, has held important positions in the Strategic Planning and Capability Development departments of the Army Headquarters.

He has shaped its modernization direction, capability roadmap and long-term ‘force structuring’ initiatives. His contribution has been vital in linking operational requirements with new technologies and future battlefield requirements. As an accomplished military professional, General Dheeraj Seth has consistently excelled in professional military education and achieved top positions in training courses. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defense College and has also undertaken the prestigious ‘Command and Staff Course’ in Paris, which reflects his broad strategic perspective and understanding of contemporary military affairs.
