Olympic Qualifier Alert! What will be the loss if India is no longer number-1 in Asia?

With the return of cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, a new challenge has come before Team India. Now every T20 International match will be very important for India, because even a slight drop in ICC T20 ranking can make the path of qualifying for the Olympics difficult. In such a situation, now the bilateral T20 series will not only be a platform to test new players, but every match will also be very important from the Olympic point of view.

Recently, under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the Indian team had to face defeat in the two T20 match series against Ireland. Although this defeat was quite embarrassing for Team India, but now after the new qualification rules of Los Angeles Olympics 2028, every such defeat can become even heavier. The reason for this is that India’s ranking points may reduce due to continuous defeats, due to which it may be difficult for Team India to get direct entry for the Olympics.

Only six teams will get a chance in the Olympics

According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), only 6 teams will play in the men’s and women’s cricket events in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. One place among these will be reserved for host America but for this it will have to remain in the top-15 in the ICC T20 rankings till the end of the qualification period. The remaining 4 tickets will go to the highest ranked teams from four different continents of the world. The last one place will be decided by the final Global Qualifier to be played between 8 teams.

Why is it important for Team India to remain number-1 in Asia?

Currently, Team India is at number-1 in the ICC T20 rankings with 272 rating points. If India remains the highest ranked team in Asia till 31 December 2026, it will get a direct ticket for the Olympics 2028. If in the meantime Pakistan overtakes India in the rankings, then Pakistan will get the direct Olympic quota for Asia. In such a situation, Team India will have to play the Final Global Qualifier for the last place, where the competition will be very difficult.

All eyes will be on the upcoming T20 series

India will play a five-match T20 series against England from July 1. After this the team will go to Zimbabwe to play three T20 matches. Then in October, five T20 matches will be played against West Indies and after this, Team India will also play five T20 matches on the New Zealand tour. All these matches will have a direct impact on the ICC T20 rankings. Especially the New Zealand tour is being considered very important.

According to the new Olympic qualification system, both India and Pakistan are likely to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics. In such a situation, fans will also be expecting a high-voltage match between India and Pakistan in the Olympics.
