Health Desk. Skin is the outermost protective shield of our body, but sometimes changes on it can also be a sign of serious disease. Skin cancer is one such disease, in which skin cells start growing abnormally. Identifying its symptoms in time can help in treatment. Therefore, any abnormal change on the skin should not be ignored.
Recognize these 5 signs of skin cancer
1. Change in size or color of mole
If the size of a mole on the body starts increasing, its color changes or its edges start appearing irregular, then it is important to pay attention to it. Changes in the mole such as itching, pain or bleeding may also indicate the need for examination.
2. New mark or lump on the skin
A sudden appearance of a new mark on the skin, a raised lump, or a wound that does not look normal can be a possible warning sign. Especially if this scar continues to grow or does not heal for a long time, consult a doctor.
3. A wound that won't heal
If a wound on the skin does not heal for several weeks, opens repeatedly or bleeds, then it is not right to ignore it as a normal problem. There can be many reasons behind such symptoms, including skin cancer.
4. Itching, pain or bleeding on the skin
If a mole or skin mark has persistent itching, sensitivity, pain, or bleeding without apparent cause, a medical checkup should be done. However, these symptoms alone do not confirm cancer.
5. Abnormal changes in skin surface
Scaling, formation of rough patches on the skin or persistent thickening or bulging appearance of any part are also noticeable. If such changes persist or increase, it is better to consult a dermatologist.
When should one contact the doctor?
If a new or changing mark appears on the skin, a wound is not healing, or there are unusual changes in the mole, get checked by a dermatologist. The doctor may recommend a skin exam and biopsy if needed. Keep in mind that not every abnormal mark seen on the skin is cancer. But timely testing can help in identification of the disease and proper treatment.
