5 types of petrol are available in the market; Which is best for your car or bike? Know complete information

There is no longer just one type of petrol in India. In the direction of changing technology, environmental protection and reducing dependence on crude oil, the government has made different grades of petrol available in the market. Today, a total of five types of petrol are being sold in the Indian market, which have different octane rating, ethanol blend and usage.

If you also want to put the right petrol in your car or bike, then it is important to know which petrol is best suited for your vehicle.

1. Regular Petrol (E20 – 91 Octane)

It is the most commonly used petrol in India. This fuel is available at most petrol pumps across the country.

It contains a mixture of 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol, which is called E20. Its octane rating is 91.

It is considered suitable for normal bikes, scooters and most petrol cars. It is the most economical option for everyday driving.

2. Premium Petrol (E20 – 95 Octane)

Indian Oil’s XP95 and Hindustan Petroleum’s Power Petrol fall in this category.

It also contains 20 percent ethanol, but its octane rating is 95. Special detergent additives are added to it, which help in keeping the engine clean and providing better performance.

It is considered a better option for modern turbo petrol engines, premium cars and high-performance scooters.

3. Super Premium Petrol (100 Octane – 0% Ethanol)

Indian Oil’s XP100 is the main fuel in this category.

Ethanol is not added to this petrol and its octane rating is 100. It has been specially designed for supercars, sports bikes and high-performance engines.

Its price is much higher than normal petrol. Its price in Delhi is around Rs 170 per liter.

4. E85 Petrol (Flex-Fuel)

E85 petrol contains approximately 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol.

It can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles. Such vehicles are specifically designed for this fuel.

Companies like Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp are developing vehicles based on this technology.

Its price in Delhi is said to be around Rs 82.12 per litre.

5. E100 (100% ethanol)

E100 is a completely ethanol based fuel, which does not mix with petrol.

It is prepared from straw, maize and agricultural residues. It is currently being used on a limited scale in pilot projects and special flex-fuel vehicles.

The government is working towards promoting its use in future. However, its retail price has not been decided on a large scale yet.

Which petrol is right for your vehicle?

• normal bike and car – E20 (91 octane) is sufficient.
• Turbo Engines and Premium Cars – XP95 or 95 octane petrol would be better.
• Sports cars and high-performance bikes – XP100 (100 octane) is suitable.
• flex-fuel vehicles – E85 or E100 can be used.
• E85 or E100 should not be used in normal vehicles.as this may damage the engine.

Why is the government increasing ethanol blending?

The government aims to reduce dependence on crude oil imports and reduce carbon emissions by increasing the amount of ethanol in petrol. This will also help in increasing the income of farmers, as ethanol is produced mainly from agriculture-based crops.

For this reason, the use of flex-fuel vehicles and ethanol-based fuels is likely to increase rapidly in the coming years.
