50 Lakh Govt Employees Await 3% DA Hike After Dusshera

Central government employees and pensioners are waiting for the government’s decision on the July 2026 Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) revision. After the Union Cabinet meeting on October 14 passed without an announcement, attention has shifted to the next meeting, expected on October 21.

The government has not officially confirmed the announcement date or the size of the proposed increase. However, employee representatives expect the revision could be announced soon, offering financial relief during the festive season.

DA May Increase from 60% to 63%

The current DA rate for central government employees is 60% of basic pay. The government approved a two-percentage-point increase in April 2026, raising the rate from 58% to 60%, effective January 1, 2026.

For the pending July revision, employees are expecting a three-percentage-point increase. If approved, DA would rise to 63% of basic pay. Pensioners would receive a corresponding increase in Dearness Relief.

However, the anticipated 3% increase remains an estimate rather than an official decision. The final rate will be known only after the government announces its approval.

Why Is October 21 Important?

The October 14 Cabinet meeting had raised hopes of an announcement, but the government approved a productivity-linked bonus for eligible railway employees instead.

Employee organisations have continued to press for an early DA revision, citing rising household expenses and the impact of inflation on salaries and pensions.

According to reports, C. Srikumar, secretary of the All India Defence Employees’ Federation, expects the government could announce the increase at the October 21 Cabinet meeting. Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that the decision will be made on that date.

How Much More Salary Could Employees Receive?

DA is calculated as a percentage of basic pay, not gross salary. For example, an employee with a basic salary of ₹18,000 currently receives ₹10,800 per month as DA at 60%.

If the rate increases to 63%, the monthly allowance would rise to ₹11,340, providing an additional ₹540 per month.

An employee with a basic salary of ₹50,000 would receive an additional ₹1,500 per month if the expected increase is approved.

Will Employees Receive Arrears?

The pending revision is due from July 1, 2026. If the government approves the increase with that effective date, eligible employees and pensioners would generally receive arrears for the period covered by the revised allowance.

The final amount would depend on the approved rate, the applicable effective date and the employee’s basic pay or pension.

Summary

Central government employees and pensioners are awaiting the July 2026 DA and DR revision, with October 21 emerging as a possible announcement date. The expected three-percentage-point increase could raise DA from 60% to 63% of basic pay. The government has not confirmed the hike, but if approved retrospectively from July 1, eligible recipients would also receive arrears.
