New Delhi, Sept 7:
At least six people were killed and several others injured after a five-storey student paying guest (PG) building collapsed in Satya Niketan, southwest Delhi, on Sunday afternoon.
The building, known as “Hostel Daze”, was reportedly around 40–50 years old. Police said construction work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed around 1.30 pm, raising concerns over whether the work contributed to the disaster.
Authorities initially feared that 30–40 people could be trapped under the rubble, though the exact number remained unconfirmed. At least five people were rescued, while emergency teams continued searching for survivors.
The building reportedly had around 15 rooms, with two or three students staying in each room. A medical shop operated on the ground floor. Residents said the hostel was generally full, with students from Kerala, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh among those staying there.
Police have registered an FIR against the building owner, Hariram Bansal, a Gurugram resident, and formed teams to trace him.
A large multi-agency rescue operation was launched, involving the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, NDRF, DDMA, MCD, Civil Defence and ambulance teams. At least 12 fire tenders were deployed, while oxygen cylinders were brought in to assist anyone trapped beneath the debris.
