6 New Electrified Kia Cars And SUVs Confirmed For India: Sonet Hybrid To Carens Clavis Hybrid

The latest chapter in Kia’s electrification journey has been the Syros EV. The electric SUV has attracted a lot of attention with its sharp pricing and compelling value proposition. The next big thing will be the Sorento hybrid, scheduled to launch in India on September 4th. A presentation at the company’s investor day has now revealed key details of its electrification roadmap ahead. By 2029, Kia India plans to launch six electrified models- five hybrids and an EV. This launch spree will start with the Sorento, next month.

Kia’s mass-market EV portfolio now has two models- the Syros EV and the Carens Clavis EV. The EV6 and EV9 belong to much higher segments and are much more expensive. The planned line of hybrid launches will include both mass-market and premium products.

The Sorento hybrid will be the first to arrive. In the Indian context, it will likely be positioned between the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Toyota Fortuner. It will come with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol strong hybrid engine that makes 238hp and 380Nm. This will be the same that powers the global-spec. The Sorento will be brought as CKD units and assembled at Kia’s Anantapur plant.

It was previously reported that the Carnival will get a strong hybrid engine sometime in the future. The slide confirms that this launch could happen sooner than expected. According to it, Kia will launch the hybrid Carnival in 2026 itself. It will be powered by a 1.6L petrol hybrid powertrain (1.6-litre turbo-petrol mated to a 54kW motor and a battery pack) making 242 hp and 367 Nm. The Carnival already has this engine on offer in international markets. Interestingly, we will soon see the Sorento and the Carnival share both of its engines!

The carmaker will launch at least four electrified vehicles (hybrids and EVs) by 2029. These are expected to be the Seltos hybrid, Carens Clavis Hybrid, Sonet hybrid and a new A-segment electric SUV. Further details of these launches aren’t known yet.

However, speculations suggest that the Seltos would come with a new 1.5-litre strong hybrid petrol engine, expected to deliver impressive fuel efficiency and performance. This powertrain is also expected to be introduced on the Carens later.

The Sonet, on the other hand, is likely to get a smaller petrol hybrid system. It will likely be a 1.2-litre hybrid unit. Details about the A-segment electric car ( or SUV?) that is in plans, remain sparse.

The above details have surfaced at an interesting time. According to a recent report by Autocar India, Kia is reportedly evaluating products to address two key gaps in its India portfolio. One of these reportedly exists between the Seltos and the soon-to-be-launched Sorento. There will be enough room for a C-segment SUV (or premium MPV) to fit in. T

he manufacturer will likely introduce a three-row SUV to plug the same. It will then look more or less like a Kia version of the Hyundai Alcazar. This product, according to reports, will be offered with different powertrain options.

The second gap is between the Syros and the Seltos, as the latter moved slightly upward in the pricing ladder with the generational update. Kia will likely address this gap with a B-segment SUV model measuring around 4.2 metres in length. It will then become a two-pronged strategy in the mid-size SUV segment, as the Seltos is already a strong volume driver. The addition of a second model will help in sealing the price gap perfectly. We don’t expect the new product to overlap significantly with the Seltos.

All these developments align well with the carmaker’s previous plans to expand the India lineup aggressively by 2030. The aggressive hybrid push will help Kia in complying with the upcoming CAFE III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms. Some reports also say that it will set up additional assembly lines at its plant to facilitate the increased production.
