8.70 crore stolen from RBI treasury, bank employee turns out to be the mastermind

Gujarat: A shocking case has come to light from Ahmedabad, where crores of rupees were stolen from the treasury of Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This theft was not carried out by any outside gang, but by an employee of the bank very cleverly. The matter is related to the branch of Bank of Baroda, where RBI cash was kept. The accused employee made away with an amount of about Rs 8.70 crore and for a long time no one had any idea about it.

Garbage bins filled with cash

According to the information, the accused had gone inside the treasury on January 13 with two laborers on the pretext of cleaning. At the same time, he filled a large amount of cash in the dustbin and casually walked out of the bank premises. He did the entire incident so clearly that no bank employee suspected him.

Even after the theft, the accused kept coming and going to the bank. He knew that the footage of the bank’s CCTV cameras gets automatically deleted after about 90 days. For this reason, he continued to come to the office regularly for about 98 days, so that no one would doubt his behavior. Later he took medical leave and went on a long leave.

During this time, the accused started living a luxurious life with the stolen money. He bought a new house, bought an expensive car and also invested in the stock market. Not only this, he also gave about Rs 23 lakh to one of his female colleagues to buy a house. His sudden increase in lifestyle also attracted people’s attention.

When was the matter revealed?

The matter came to light when the cash kept in the treasury was verified by RBI. During investigation, the amount was found to be less, after which the CCTV footage of the bank was scrutinized. After watching the footage, the secret of the entire theft was revealed. The police immediately registered an FIR and started investigation and found out that the accused had gone to Manali for a trip.

The police raided and arrested the accused on 22 May. About Rs 2.20 crore in cash was recovered from the car parked outside his house. During interrogation the accused confessed to his crime. He told that he was working in the bank for the last 15 years and he committed this theft to live a life of luxury. The accused also admitted that he had spent around Rs 4 crore of the stolen amount. At present, the police is busy searching for the remaining amount and the role of the accused’s wife, who is said to be a constable in the Railway Police, is also being investigated.
