9.19 lakh VPN downloads in one day, users adopted new path after Telegram ban

Knews Desk- After the temporary ban on Telegram in India, a big change has been seen in the pattern of internet usage. As access to messaging apps became limited, millions of users started looking for alternative ways, leading to a record surge in downloading of Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps. According to data from App Intelligence Firm, downloads of VPN apps in India reached 9.19 lakh on June 17, which is the highest single-day figure so far in 2026.

It has been said in the report that this is about 76 percent more than normal days. Experts say that this increase is not just a result of technical need, but shows how rapidly the dependence on digital platforms has increased. As soon as access to Telegram was disrupted, users immediately turned to VPNs and alternative messaging platforms.

The biggest impact of the ban on Telegram was on its user base. Millions of people who use this platform for groups, channels, news updates, study material and other content turned to VPN instead of abandoning it. VPN technology allows users to access the Internet through another server by hiding their IP address, which can sometimes bypass regional restrictions.

Many VPN apps have benefited greatly from this change. According to the report, there was a manifold increase in the downloading of apps like Proton VPN, Turbo VPN and Ninja VPN. Downloads of some apps saw an increase of more than 100 percent and some up to 600 percent. This also brought a big change in the ranking of Google Play Store and many VPN apps reached the top charts.

Interestingly, not only VPNs, but alternative versions of Telegram and related apps have also seen a huge boost. Thousands of percent increase was recorded in downloads of apps like Telegram This shows that users are looking for alternatives within Telegram’s ecosystem rather than leaving Telegram altogether.

However, not all apps received equal benefits. Due to WhatsApp’s already large user base, it has seen relatively limited growth. At the same time, there was a significant increase in downloads of privacy-focused app Signal, which made it clear that many users were looking for a more secure and independent platform and not just messaging.

Use of VPN is not illegal in India, but if it is used for illegal activities then it comes under the ambit of the law. Under government regulations, VPN companies have to keep user data and logs secure, due to which many big companies have closed their physical servers in India.

The ban on Telegram has created a new trend in the digital world. This case shows that despite Internet restrictions, users quickly adopt technological solutions and find alternative ways to access any platform.
