Manisha Koirala reveals Mani Ratnam had a different climax in Dil Se’s original script

In 1998, Mani Ratnam gave a timeless romantic classic From the heart (Uyire in Tamil), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta. Despite not creating a ripple at the box office at the time of its release, it gained cult classic status over time for the hero’s persevering love and the great music.

In a recent interview, the film’s leading lady, Manisha Koirala, revealed that the first draft of the script had SRK surviving in the climax.

“But also in the original script that was there, that we had agreed on for both the guys, the terrorists and the hero, the cause is larger in the sense that she is going anyways to mutilate herself and actually in the present version he goes and he also dies. But in the original version, he lets her die,” Manisha said while speaking to ANI.

Shah Rukh Khan plays elegantly the role of an All India Radio employee, Amarkanth Verma, while Manisha plays Moina, whose association with a terrorist sleeper cell. Amar, while covering the unrest in Assam, falls in love with Moina, unaware of her background. Amar, following his continuous persuasion to embrace his love for Moina, both die together, embracing each other as her suicide vest explodes.
