Noida Workers Protest Yogi Government Announces 21 Increase In Minimum Wages In Noida
Amidst the workers’ protests in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government has taken a big step and announced an interim increase of up to 21 percent in the minimum wages in Noida and Ghaziabad. This decision has been taken in view of the recent labor movements in the industrial areas of Gautam Buddha Nagar.
According to the government, this increase will be effective from April 1 and includes dearness allowance along with the basic salary. Under the new rates, wages have been fixed at Rs 13,690 for unskilled workers, Rs 15,059 for semi-skilled workers and Rs 16,868 for skilled workers.
However, if we talk only about the basic monthly salary, it has been fixed at Rs 11,313.65 (Rs 435.14 daily) for unskilled workers, Rs 12,446 (Rs 478.69 daily) for semi-skilled workers and Rs 13,940.37 (Rs 536.16 daily) for skilled workers. The government has clarified that the news of Rs 20,000 minimum wage is misleading.
Decision taken after protests
On Monday (April 13), the workers’ protest in many areas including Phase-2, Sector-62 of Noida turned violent for the fourth day. Amidst the rumors and discontent, incidents of vandalism and arson of vehicles of industrial companies came to light. After this, the administration took strict action against the unruly elements and controlled the situation.
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the state government sent the Principal Secretary of the Labor Department to Noida, so that the confusion spread regarding wages could be cleared. District Magistrate Medha Rupam and other officials also established communication with labor organizations.
Government’s emphasis on balancing
The government says that it wants to take decisions by striking a balance between workers and industries. This interim increase in minimum wages is a step in that direction. According to officials, wages may be further revised in future after the recommendations of the Wage Board and implementation of the new labor code.
The Chief Minister has also assured to consider bonus and other allowances for the workers. Besides, instructions have been given to ensure the safety of women workers and provide better facilities at workplaces. The government has also made it clear that strict action will continue against those involved in illegal activities and spreading misinformation. At the same time, an appeal has been made to the workers to maintain peace and put forward their demands through dialogue.
