A sleeper bus overturned in Rajasthan’s Kota district late Wednesday night, killing three people and injuring more than 20 passengers after those thrown onto the road were run over by an oncoming trolley. Police said an investigation is underway.
The accident took place near Nayagaon Pulia in the RK Puram police station area when a sleeper bus lost control, crossed the divider, and overturned. Several passengers were thrown onto the road after the bus flipped, and three of them were crushed by a trolley approaching from behind.
Following the incident, a rescue operation continued through the night, and injured passengers were taken to Kota Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
According to information, the private sleeper bus was traveling from Ahmedabad in Gujarat to Gwalior and Bhind in Madhya Pradesh. Most passengers on board were residents of Madhya Pradesh. The bus reached Kota around midnight when the accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses and passengers stated that the bus began swerving on the road and lost control before crossing the divider and overturning into the opposite lane.
The exact cause of the accident has not been confirmed. Some passengers claimed that an unidentified person threw a stone at the front windshield of the bus, causing the driver to lose balance and control.
Police, however, indicated that the driver may have lost control after a sudden animal appeared on the road. Authorities said all angles are being examined and no cause has been confirmed so far.
Police said the most severe aspect of the incident occurred when several passengers were thrown onto the road through broken windows after the bus overturned. A fast-moving trolley coming from behind struck these passengers.
Of the deceased, two have not yet been identified, while one has been identified. The victims were seated near the bus cabin and fell directly onto the road after the vehicle overturned.
Local police and administrative teams reached the site immediately after the incident. Injured passengers were rescued by cutting through the broken windows and doors of the bus. Several passengers were trapped inside, and their extraction took considerable time.
The rescue operation continued until around 2:30 am, and critically injured passengers were transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Passengers admitted to the hospital described the sequence of events. One passenger said the bus began swerving at high speed and overturned within seconds. He said he broke a window to escape and attempted to rescue his family members.
Another passenger stated that several people remained trapped inside the bus during the accident and were shouting for help until rescue teams broke the glass and evacuated them.
According to the Superintendent of Police, a detailed investigation has been initiated. Authorities are examining the technical condition of the bus, the role of the driver, and road conditions at the time of the accident.
Officials said the exact cause of death will be determined after post-mortem and forensic reports. The administration has also issued directions to enforce road safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
