“Delimitation can become political demonetisation” – Shashi Tharoor warns Center in Lok Sabha
Lok Sabha Updates: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor gave an open warning to the Central Government on the issue of delimitation in the Lok Sabha, saying that implementing it hastily can prove to be harmful for the country. Citing the 2016 demonetisation in India, he said that just as demonetisation was implemented without adequate preparation, delimitation could also become “political demonetisation”. Taking aim at the government, Tharoor said, “Demonetization was implemented suddenly and its impact was seen by the entire country. Now the delimitation is also being carried forward in the same manner, which is not right.” He also raised the question what impact this process would have on the cooperative federalism of the country.

Tharoor also expressed strong objection to linking women’s reservation with delimitation. He said that the government is calling it a gift in the name of ‘women power’, but in reality it has been given complex conditions. She says that women’s reservation is a ready and urgent issue, which can be implemented immediately on the basis of existing seats, but it has been linked to the controversial process like increasing and delimiting the number of seats, due to which the expectations of women are being affected. Tharoor further said that after delimitation, there is a danger of the balance between the states getting disturbed. Giving examples, he said that states in South India, such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which have succeeded in population control, may suffer losses, while states with higher population growth may gain more political power. In the end, he appealed to the government to first implement women’s reservation and to put a stop to the sensitive issue like delimitation, so that a thoughtful and balanced decision can be taken in the interest of the country.
