CSK struggles may be short-lived, says Ashwin

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings have slipped to the lower half of the Indian Premier League table after losing four of their six matches this season under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad raising concerns over the team’s transition phase.

However, former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes the downturn may not last long and hinted that Sanju Samson could take over leadership responsibilities in the future.

Inconsistent run dents CSK campaign

The Chennai-based franchise, which finished at the bottom of the table last season, showed brief signs of recovery with two consecutive wins earlier this year. However, their inconsistency resurfaced during a recent loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad while chasing a 180-plus total.

CSK’s struggles in high-scoring chases have been a recurring issue since 2018, with the team often failing to chase down big targets successfully. This pattern has once again affected their standings in the current season.

Gaikwad faces pressure in leadership role

Gaikwad, entrusted with captaincy as part of the transition from the MS Dhoni era, has faced criticism for his on-field decisions and inability to consistently inspire the team.

CSK has struggled to find a long-term successor to Dhoni, experimenting earlier with Ravindra Jadeja before handing over the reins to Gaikwad.

Ashwin backs Samson’s leadership potential

Ashwin suggested that Sanju Samson could emerge as a future captain for CSK, though he refrained from specifying a timeline.

“I’m no astrologer, but I do see Sanju captaining CSK at some stage. He should not step into someone else’s legacy but create his own identity,” Ashwin said during an interaction with ESPNcricinfo.

Samson, who previously led Rajasthan Royals to the final in 2022, has been praised for his ability to take feedback and build strong relationships within the team.

T20 cricket demands evolving mindset

Ashwin also reflected on the changing nature of T20 cricket, noting that the format now prioritises impact over individual milestones.

“In T20 cricket, it’s about attacking, defending and delivering results rather than focusing on personal scores like 50s or 100s,” he said, adding that both players and fans are still adapting to this evolving mindset.

Upcoming clash against Mumbai Indians

With injuries affecting squad balance, including the absence of Ayush Mhatre, CSK will look to regroup quickly. The team is set to face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23 in a crucial fixture.

Conclusion

While CSK’s current form has raised concerns, Ashwin’s remarks suggest optimism around a possible turnaround. With leadership questions looming and key matches ahead, the franchise’s ability to adapt and respond will be critical in shaping the remainder of its campaign.
