‘Bhondu Baba’ exposed: More than 60 women accused of sexual exploitation
Mumbai Police has arrested a Bhondu Baba for exploiting women under the guise of faith and superstition. The accused has been identified as Rhythm Panchal, 37, who was earlier a gym trainer and later started calling himself a ‘spiritual healer’. So far, more than 60 women have filed complaints against this person, known as ‘Bhondu Baba’ in Malad area.
According to the police, Panchal used to call women to his house in the name of treatment and problem solving, where he allegedly sexually exploited them on the pretext of tantra-mantra. He would often call his victims late at night, even at midnight, and perform objectionable acts in the name of ‘puja’.
Investigation has revealed that the accused used to organize so-called ‘sessions’ every Thursday and Saturday from 8 pm to 7 am. He described himself as an incarnation of the goddess and claimed that he could cure any disease, especially problems like infertility. Police say he specifically targeted vulnerable and distressed women.
In return for these so-called treatments, Panchal allegedly demanded huge sums of money, expensive liquor, cigarettes, live chicken and goat liver. It is alleged that he appeared to be possessed by some power during ‘exorcism’ and allegedly even placed a burning cigarette in the mouth of the victims.
The matter came to light when the accused started threatening some of the victims and sent goons to their homes. After this, a victim contacted former councilor and advocate Siddharth Sharma, who helped in taking the matter to the police.
According to sources, there are also allegations of the accused having some political contacts, which is being investigated.
Dindoshi police has registered a case against the accused under several serious sections. Officials say that more than 60 complaints have been received so far and the scope of investigation may expand further. More victims are expected to come forward in the coming days.
