Fact Check: Chennai Super Kings did not file ‘black magic’ complaint after viral SRH fan video; letter is fake
One of the best teams of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings, is not faring well this time due to the absence of MS Dhoni, who isn’t playing amid a leg injury. With this, Sunrisers Hyderabad and other teams have buckled up and are playing well. During the last match, SRH won against CSK. A clip has gone viral that shows an SRH fan seated in the stands chanting prayers with a ‘lemon’ in hand.
In a dramatic twist, just seconds after the fan’s actions were caught on camera, SRH bowler Sakib Hussain delivered a ball that clean bowled Shivam Dube, sending the stumps flying. The uncanny timing between the fan praying with a lemon in hand and Shivam Dube getting dismissed has triggered memes and playful reactions. Many alleged that SRH fans were doing black magic so that their team would win.
After that, an image of a letter has been circulating on social media, which says the Super Kings decided to lodge a complaint to the Board of Control for Cricket in India over the incident.
Amid a wave of reactions, a viral post on X claimed that CSK has also allegedly put out a letter and taken the incident up with the BCCI. In the letter, which had the signature of CEO Kasi Viswanathan and the CSK letterhead, the franchise is claimed to have written to the board to take strict action.
The letter reads, “Throughout the match, our players were repeatedly subjected to disturbing incidents where certain sections of the audience were seen and reported engaging in black magic, voodoo rituals, and other occult practices, intentionally targeting CSK players. Visuals and credible eyewitness accounts shared with us indicate individuals making unusual hand gestures, drawing strange symbols, using black cloth, and performing acts that are deeply unsettling and against the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Is the letter photoshopped or real?
No, this is not true, and the post is 100% fake. CSK has not taken up the matter with the BCCI, and it is just fan banter during the IPL 2026 season. It is likely a dig at the franchise after they raised a complaint regarding the ‘derogatory’ songs played during their game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium earlier in the season. As for the SRH claim, no official statement has been made yet.
The photoshopped notice has been shared widely on X. CSK and the BCCI have issued no statements on the matter.
