Surrey Vaisakhi Parade Welcomes Over 450,000 Participants in One of the Largest Celebrations Outside India – Obnews
More than 450,000 people gathered in Surrey for the city’s annual Vaisakhi parade, once again confirming its place as the largest celebration of its kind outside India. The remarkable turnout highlighted the strength, unity, and cultural pride of the Sikh community, as families and visitors from across the region came together to celebrate one of the most important festivals in the Sikh calendar. According to CBC News, the event continues to attract participants from across the Lower Mainland and beyond each year.
Vaisakhi commemorates the creation of the Khalsa in 1699, a defining moment in Sikh history that shaped the faith’s identity and values. The festival also marks the spring harvest and the beginning of a new year, making it both a spiritual and cultural celebration. Along the parade route, thousands of volunteers served free food and refreshments as part of the tradition of langar and seva, reflecting the Sikh commitment to equality, generosity, and community service.
The parade began near Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar and featured more than 20 decorated floats, including one carrying the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Cultural performances, music, and Gatka martial arts demonstrations added vibrant energy throughout the day, creating a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds to experience Sikh traditions and celebrate together in a spirit of joy and togetherness.
