Security guard stitches up patient in Bihar government hospital, creates panic
In a government hospital in Bihar, a security personnel was seen stitching a patient, after which there is an uproar over the functioning of the hospital administration. Serious questions have been raised on the health system after a video of a security guard stitching a patient’s wound at Bagaha sub-division hospital in West Champaran district of Bihar has gone viral.
In a video viral on social media, a security personnel can be seen treating an injured patient inside the minor operation theater of the hospital. According to the rules, only trained doctors and nursing staff can enter the operation theatre, so carrying out a medical procedure by a security personnel is considered a gross violation of safety standards.
According to the information, there was a head-on collision between a tempo and a pickup van. The accident was so serious that the pickup vehicle overturned on the road and many people including its driver were injured. The tempo driver is said to be absconding from the spot. With the help of local people, the injured were immediately brought to Bagaha Sub-Divisional Hospital. Meanwhile, in an emergency, the security personnel stitched the patient due to lack of doctors.
Injured pickup driver Wasim Akhtar and another victim Surendra Pasi claimed that their wounds were stitched by the same security personnel. He termed it as serious negligence and said that getting treatment from an untrained person could have put his life in danger.
After the matter gained prominence, the hospital administration has given clarification. Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Ashok Kumar Tiwari said that the hospital has been suffering from acute shortage of staff and doctors for a long time.
He said that the posts of Operation Theater Assistant and Dresser are vacant for a long time, due to which work has to be done with limited resources. According to him, on the day of the incident, about half a dozen seriously injured patients had reached the hospital together, which put a burden on the hospital management. Dr. Tiwari said that after seeing a patient bleeding profusely, the help of security personnel was taken under the supervision of the doctor.
However, despite the administration’s clarification, this incident highlights the condition of Bihar’s health system. According to the 2016-2022 report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), about 49% of the posts in state health departments are vacant.
Let us tell you that against the World Health Organization (WHO) standard of one doctor per 1000 population, one doctor in Bihar is responsible for 2148 people. At the same time, only 58,144 doctors are available in the state against the required 1,24,919 doctors. The shortage of nursing and paramedical staff is also serious. The shortage of nurses ranges from 18% to 72% and the shortage of paramedical staff ranges from 45% to 90% in many districts.
This incident not only exposes administrative negligence but also the ground reality of health services. Experts believe that if the staff shortage is not resolved soon, such incidents can become a major threat to the safety of patients.
