Code of conduct: When EC asked to investigate PM’s statement, BJP went after Kharge!
Bureau Prayagraj- Amidst the news of ECI investigation into allegations of election code of conduct violation after PM Modi’s address to the nation, BJP has now opened a front against Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Big ministers of Modi government reached ECI to complain against Kharge. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has also accused BJP of violating the election code of conduct in Bengal.
Many political parties are accusing each other of breaking the Model Code of Conduct i.e. MCC. The Election Commission has decided to investigate the opposition’s complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Commission has taken this decision after the complaint of the opposition. Actually, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed the nation on 18 April. Opposition parties say that this address is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct during elections.
Opposition leaders, left parties and about 700 activists and common citizens wrote a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged that the Prime Minister tried to influence the elections by using government broadcasters Doordarshan and Akashvani. CPI (M) General Secretary MA Baby wrote that this address of the Prime Minister was to influence public opinion in the election-bound states. Due to this, there is no level playing field in elections and the foundation of democracy is shaken.
Media reports quoting Election Commission sources have said that this complaint will be investigated by the Model Code of Conduct Division. Let us tell you that the Model Code is in effect from March 15 and will remain till May 4, when the votes for the assembly elections of five states will be counted. On the other hand, BJP has demanded strict action from the Election Commission on the statement of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. On Wednesday, the BJP delegation including three Union ministers met the Election Commission. The delegation included Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and BJP national general secretary Arun Singh.
Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Congress President called the Prime Minister a ‘terrorist’ during the press conference in Tamil Nadu, which is very wrong and condemnable. This is an insult to the mandate given by the people of the entire country. Sitharaman said that Congress is saying this out of frustration due to fear of defeat. BJP demanded that Kharge and Congress apologize to the country. Kiren Rijiju called it a ‘disgusting act’ and said that the Election Commission should take such strict action that in future no one would dare to call the Prime Minister a terrorist.
Kharge had said in Chennai that Modi is terrorizing democracy and misusing agencies. He later clarified that he did not literally say ‘terrorist’, but he meant that he was ‘terrorizing’. Kharge said, ‘They are terrorizing people and political parties. I never said that they are literal terrorists. He added that the Modi government is misusing power and suppressing the opposition. BJP had also written a letter to the Election Commission on Tuesday demanding a public apology from Kharge and action against him under the sections of BNS.
