‘Even Ambedkar would not have thought like this…’, why did SC say this for Mamata Banerjee?

Just 24 hours before the first phase of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received a strong rebuke from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court described the Chief Minister’s interference during the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on the house of I-PAC co-founder Prateek Jain in January as a serious threat to democracy. The court said in strong words that no person holding a constitutional post can obstruct the investigation process in this way. The Supreme Court also said that even Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar would not have thought that a Chief Minister would do such a thing.

The case is of January 2026, when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team was raiding the house of election strategist Prateek Jain. During this time, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself reached the spot and interfered in the investigation. Describing this conduct as extraordinary, the Supreme Court has raised serious questions on the functioning of the Mamata government.

The bench of Justice PK Mishra and Justice NV Anjaria made a historic comment while hearing the case. The court said, ‘This is the action of a person who, despite being the Chief Minister, used the entire government machinery to endanger democracy.’ The bench further said that the makers of our Constitution and Dr. BR Ambedkar would never have imagined that such a situation would arise in independent India when a sitting Chief Minister would himself enter the premises to stop a criminal investigation.

Serious allegation of tampering with evidence

It is noteworthy that on January 8, ED was searching the house of Prateek Jain in the case of coal smuggling and money laundering. ED alleges that Mamata Banerjee entered during the raid and removed important documents and many electronic devices from there, which affected the evidence of the investigation. However, Mamata Banerjee rejected these allegations outright, saying that she had only gone to collect documents related to her party (TMC) and this entire action was motivated by political vendetta.

The Supreme Court termed the current circumstances of Bengal as extraordinary and said that this is not an ordinary legal battle. The court said in a harsh tone, ‘We cannot close our eyes to whatever is happening in Bengal. It is important to look at the practical situation of the state. At present, the court is hearing the ED’s petition in which a CBI investigation has been demanded against Mamata Banerjee and her associates.
