Delhi High Court rejects plea for additional evidence in Unnao case
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined the Unnao rape survivor’s request to present further evidence against former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is serving a life sentence for the 2017 gang rape of a minor. Sengar’s appeal against this conviction remains pending before the court.
A division bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Mandhu Jain dismissed the application after hearing submissions from the counsel representing the petitioner, the convict, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court stated it would proceed with Sengar’s appeal based on the evidence already recorded.
The survivor had sought to introduce evidence relating to her age as indicated by school records. Following the rejection of this plea, the High Court scheduled the appeal hearing for May 25.
Senior advocate N Hariharan and Advocate SPM Tripathi represented Kuldeep Singh Sengar, while Advocate Mehmood Pracha appeared for the victim in relation to the application. Pracha submitted that the applicant wished to present additional evidence and documents regarding her age.
The Tis Hazari court had convicted and sentenced Sengar to life imprisonment in the minor rape case. The Supreme Court subsequently transferred the case to Delhi. On December 23, 2025, the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar’s sentence pending appeal, but this suspension was stayed by the Supreme Court on December 29, 2025.
