Election Commission of India seems to be more prepared this time to keep the voting process fair and transparent in this important period of democracy.

Tampering with EVM button is an offence
As per the directives issued by the Commission, no tampering with the buttons of EVMs will be tolerated. In the past, there have been complaints of glue, tape or other substances being applied to the button of a particular candidate at some places. Now if ink, perfume or any other chemical substance is found on any button it will be treated as direct election offence. Such acts violate the confidentiality of voting and obstruct the voting process. A provision has been made to immediately file a criminal case against the concerned.
Possibility of re-voting in case of glitches
The Commission has also kept open the option of re-voting to maintain the transparency of voting. The presiding officers have been directed to keep a constant watch on the EVMs and report any suspicious movement to the higher authorities immediately. If a polling station is found to be heavily tampered with, it may be decided to cancel the polling at that station and re-poll it.

Restrictions on outside workers
Stricter regulations have been implemented in some states to further strengthen security. Accordingly, political office bearers and workers outside the respective constituencies must vacate the area 48 hours before the commencement of polling. This decision will reduce the possibility of external pressure or confusion on the polling day. It has also been clarified that action will be taken against those who violate the rules.
Special facilities for voters
Apart from security, the commission has also provided various facilities to provide a comfortable environment for the voters. Drinking water, toilets, shade system and lighting have been provided at the polling stations. Ramps, seating arrangements and separate facilities will be available for senior citizens and disabled voters. Also, ‘Voter Assistance Booth’ has been set up at every polling station, voters can easily get their number and station information. For security reasons, mobile phones have been banned from being carried inside the polling station and arrangements have been made to keep them outside.
