Breaking into Didi’s fort in Bengal is still a difficult task, will Mamata’s ground hold outweigh the Modi wave? – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: The path to power in West Bengal passes through the streets and villages, where even today the magic of Mamata Banerjee is seen intact. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has increased its strength manifold in Bengal in the last few years, but the ground reality is that the path to demolishing the impenetrable fort of Trinamool Congress (TMC) is still thorny. Election strategists believe that to win ‘Mission Bengal’, BJP needs not just rallies but also cuts to Mamata Banerjee’s populist schemes.
Organizational structure: Where BJP is lagging behind TMC
The bitter truth of Bengal politics is that elections here are won not only on issues but on strong booth management. Mamata Banerjee has a long army of cadres at every village and block level. On the contrary, even though BJP has put in all its strength from Delhi, at the local level it still lacks strong faces who can stand in direct competition with Mamata. This hold of TMC at the booth level still remains the biggest challenge for the BJP.
‘Lakshmi Bhandar’ and women vote bank: Mamata’s biggest weapon
Mamata Banerjee’s schemes like ‘Lakshmi Bhandar’ have greatly strengthened her position among the women of Bengal. A large section of women in rural areas see Mamata as their ‘elder didi’. BJP has tried to corner the Mamata government by raising issues like corruption and Sandeshkhali, but a large section of the people who directly benefit from government schemes is still seen standing with TMC. These ‘silent voters’ are playing an important role in stopping the victory chariot of BJP.
Hindutva card vs war of Bengali identity
The BJP has tried to make inroads in Bengal through Hindutva and polarisation, but Mamata Banerjee has hit back by making it a battle of ‘Bengali asmita’ (Bengali pride) versus ‘outsiders’. By linking the legacy of personalities like Rabindranath Tagore and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar with her politics, Mamata has established herself as the protector of Bengal’s culture. It is currently proving difficult for the BJP to break this ‘cultural shield’.
Will the equation change in 2026? Delhi’s eyes on Bengal
Even though the path is difficult for BJP, the party has not given up. Home Minister Amit Shah and JP Nadda are continuously visiting Bengal and trying to breathe new life into the organization. BJP’s strategy now is to focus on those seats where the margin of defeat last time was less. Political experts say that if BJP succeeds in strengthening the local leadership and increasing its acceptance among the Bengali society, only then will it be able to breach Mamata’s fort.
