What should not to do during Kedarnath trek

Every year a large number of people go to Kedarnath to visit Baba Kedar, but this journey is not easy. It requires good preparation along with devotion. If you are also planning to go to Kedarnath, then it is very important to keep some important things in mind while trekking. Even small carelessness can make the journey difficult.

Altitude, changing weather and long treks become a challenge for many people. In such a situation, starting a journey without preparation, taking the weather lightly or ignoring body signals can increase problems. Therefore, before starting the trek, know some important do’s and what not to do.

1. Don’t mistake the trek for an easy one

The route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is a continuous climb. As altitude increases, pressure on the body also increases, so trekking without preparation can be difficult.

What to do?

  • Start walking, climbing stairs, or doing light cardio daily a few weeks before the trip.
  • Carry comfortable shoes and a light bag.
  • Take only necessary items with you.

What not to do?

Don’t start a trek thinking that “if everyone else does it, we will do it too.” Do not carry a very heavy bag.

2. Never take the weather lightly

The weather in the Himalayan regions can change within a few hours. Sunshine in the morning and rain or severe cold till evening is common.

What to do?

  • Be sure to keep thermal clothes, gloves, woolen socks and raincoat.
  • Dress in layers so you can adjust to the weather.
  • Always keep rain protection items in your bag.

What not to do?

  • Don’t rely only on light cotton clothes.
  • Don’t make the mistake of abandoning your preparation just because the weather is good during the day.

3. Don’t ignore body signals

Due to less oxygen in high altitude areas, you may feel shortness of breath, headache or weakness.

What to do?

  • Keep drinking water regularly. You will get relief by drinking water.
  • Carry ORS, dry fruits and light snacks.
  • Walk slowly and rest in between.

What not to do?

  • Do not ignore dizziness, vomiting or excessive breathlessness.
  • Do not constantly try to walk fast to reach there quickly.

4. Starting a journey without planning can prove costly

Weather, crowd and road conditions can change anytime during Kedarnath Yatra.

What to do?

  • Be sure to register before travelling.
  • Check weather and route updates regularly.
  • Book hotels, helicopter or pony services in advance.
  • Keep identity card and power bank with you.

What not to do?

  • Do not start traveling without preparation during monsoon or peak season.
  • Do not forget important documents and emergency numbers.
