Highest ever voting percentage recorded in both the states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu
Both the states have recorded the highest ever voting percentage in the elections held under West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. According to the Election Commission, 85.13 percent voting took place in Tamil Nadu and 92.59 percent voting in West Bengal, which is the highest figure since independence.
Earlier, the highest turnout in Tamil Nadu was 78.3 percent in the 2011 assembly elections, while in West Bengal 84.7 percent was recorded in 2011. This time these records were crossed in both the states.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reacting to the record turnout, said, “Highest ever voter turnout in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu since Independence – ECI salutes every voter of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.”
This time the contest in Tamil Nadu was triangular, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance, the AIDMK alliance and political interference from actor Joseph Vijay. The DMK gave prominence to the Dravidian model and welfare schemes in its election campaign, while the AIDMK and the BJP have promised corruption-free governance and ending dynasty rule.
Regarding the increased voting percentage in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan said, “This signals the end of DMK. People have given their mandate. We are saying that there is a lot of anti-incumbency on the ground, and people will definitely show it in the elections, and they have shown it.”
On the other hand, security arrangements remained tight during voting in West Bengal. 41 people were arrested in cases of election-related violence in the state, while 571 people were taken into preventive custody. Police action was seen in various areas, with arrests made in areas like Nauda, Kumarganj, Murarai, Sainthia and Dubrajpur. The second phase of elections in West Bengal is proposed on April 29, while the election results of both the states will be declared on May 4.
The high voting percentage is being seen as an increase in people’s participation in the democratic process, although what its political consequences will be will be clear only after the counting of votes.
