National Human Rights Commission’s action on Vedanta plant accident, issued notice to CS-DGP, sought reply on compensation, treatment and action.
Raipur. Taking suo motu cognizance of the horrific boiler accident at Vedanta Power Plant in Sakti district, the National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of the state. The commission has sought a detailed report from both the officers within two weeks.
The Commission has said that if the media reports are true then this case falls in the category of serious violation of human rights of the victims. In the notice, it has been asked to provide information about the current status of compensation being given to the families of the deceased laborers and the injured. Besides, a report has also been sought on the treatment and updated health status of the 20 laborers injured in the accident. The National Human Rights Commission has also asked how far has the investigation into the cause of the accident reached and what action has been taken against the culprits so far.
Let us tell you that on April 14, there was a blast in Boiler Unit 1 of Vedanta Power Plant located in Singhanatrai village of Sakti district. At the time of the incident, 40-50 laborers were working there. Many workers were seriously burnt due to the release of steam at a temperature of about 600 degrees Celsius. So far 25 laborers have died. Many laborers are injured and their treatment is ongoing.

The state government has asked for a report from the investigating officer within 30 days.
Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai had expressed grief over this accident and ordered an investigation into the incident and directed to take action against the culprits. The state government has appointed Bilaspur Divisional Commissioner as the investigating officer to investigate the matter and has given instructions to submit the report within 30 days. At the same time, a team of industrial safety and boiler inspectors from the Central Government has also reached the spot for investigation. The Commission is monitoring the entire matter.
FIR registered against 19 people including Chairman Anil Aggarwal
Let us tell you that the investigation into the Vedanta Power Plant accident has prima facie revealed negligence on the part of the plant management. Taking major action in this case, the police have registered an FIR against 19 people including Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Aggarwal, Plant Head Devendra Patel. An offense has been registered against all under sections 106(1), 289 and 3(5) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS).
The company will provide jobs along with compensation to the families of the deceased.
Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai had announced to give Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand to the injured. PMO had also announced compensation. From PMNRF, Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of each deceased and Rs 50 thousand will be given to the injured. Vedanta Power Plant management had also announced to provide Rs 35 lakh each as assistance and jobs to the families of the deceased. At the same time, it was said that Rs 15 lakh each would be given to the injured.
