Indian Navy’s strength increased, BDL handed over indigenous heavy torpedo to NSTL
Vishakhapattanamah Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a premier Defense Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, on Thursday handed over a production-grade Wire Guided Heavy Weight Torpedo (WGHWT) to the Naval Science and Technical Laboratory (NSTL) at its Visakhapatnam unit. This is a major achievement in the field of indigenous defense manufacturing. In a statement issued by BDL late on Friday night, it was said that senior officials participated in this program, including distinguished scientist and director general R.V. Hara Prasad, Chairman and Managing Director of BDL A. Madhavrao, and Abraham Varghese. Along with these, teams from BDL, NSTL and Indian Navy were also present.
BDL as Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) collaborated closely with NSTL to successfully realize India’s first indigenous production-grade wire-guided heavy weight torpedo. The system has been developed in both exercise and combat configurations and has been formally handed over to NSTL. This is an important step towards strengthening India’s self-reliance in advanced naval weapon systems under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The torpedo is equipped with advanced homing and propulsion systems, along with sophisticated search, attack and re-attack capabilities, significantly enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Navy.
Officials said this achievement reflects the strong collaboration between Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and BDL, which is supported by a wide network of industrial partners including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The successful production of such a complex underwater weapon system underlines India’s growing expertise in cutting-edge naval technologies. On this occasion, the dignitaries appreciated the efforts of the scientists, engineers and production teams who contributed to the project.
