IPL 2026: Punjab Kings broke their run chase record, defeated Delhi Capitals by six wickets.
New Delhi. Thanks to the stormy partnership of 126 runs for the first wicket between Prabhsimran Singh (73) and Priyansh Arya (43) and the runs of captain Shreyas Iyer (71 not out), Punjab Kings broke their record and defeated Delhi Capitals by six wickets with seven balls to spare in the 35th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Saturday.
This is Punjab Kings’ sixth win in the tournament. They have not lost any match in seven matches so far. Chasing a huge target of 265 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the opening pair of Prabhasimran Singh and Priyansh Arya gave a good start to their team by adding 126 runs for the first wicket. These two batsmen of Punjab batted in the first six overs of the power play in such a way as if there were no players in the field except the batsman and the bowler.
Prabhasimran hit six fours in the sixth over. Axar Patel ended this partnership by dismissing Priyansh Arya in the seventh over. Priyansh Arya scored 43 runs in 17 balls, hitting two fours and five sixes. In the very next over, Kuldeep Yadav brought Delhi back into the match by LBWing Prabhsimran Singh. Prabhsimran Singh played an inning of 76 runs in 26 balls, hitting nine fours and five sixes. Nehal Badhera (25) was out as the third wicket after scoring runs.
Punjab Kings have broken their own record in run chase. They chased the score of 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and today against Delhi Capitals they made the target of 265 even smaller. After the historic innings of KL Rahul, it seemed that the victory chariot of Punjab Kings would stop but Sir Ponting’s punters are determined not to accept defeat this season. There was amazing batting in the powerplay and later Sarpant Shreyas took over the job with his half-century.
However, like the first innings, there were incidents of misfielding in the second innings too. Two easy catches were dropped by Shreyas. However, whatever be the case, achieving the target of 265 is a big thing. Punjab Kings scored 265 runs for four wickets in 18.5 overs and won the match by six wickets. Shreyas Iyer played a match-winning inning of unbeaten 71 runs, hitting three fours and seven sixes in 36 balls. Shashank Singh scored unbeaten 19 runs in 10 balls.
Earlier today, on the basis of explosive batting of KL Rahul (152 not out) and Nitish Rana (91), Delhi Capitals scored the highest score in IPL history by scoring 264 runs for two wickets against Punjab Kings. Delhi Capitals won the toss and decided to bat first. Coming to bat, Arshdeep Singh gave the first blow to Delhi Capitals by dismissing Pathum Nissanka (11) in the third over.
After this, Nitish Rana, who came to bat, made an unbeaten partnership of runs with KL Rahul and took the team’s score beyond 200 runs in 15.3 overs. During this, KL Rahul completed his century. He completed his century in 47 balls, hitting 12 fours and five sixes. Nitish Kumar got a lease of life on the boundary in the 17th over.
The record 220 runs of this season of IPL was the biggest partnership between the two batsmen. In the 19th over, Xavier Bartlett got Nitish Rana, who was moving towards a century, caught out by Shreyas Iyer. Nitish Rana played an inning of 91 runs in 44 balls, hitting 11 fours and four sixes. Delhi Capitals scored a record huge score of 264 runs for two wickets in the stipulated 20 overs.
KL Rahul completed his sixth IPL century in 45 balls. He played an unbeaten inning of 152 runs in 67 balls, hitting 16 fours and nine sixes. This is the highest score by an Indian batsman in IPL and the third highest score in IPL.
