Conflict between Naga-Kuki communities in Manipur; death of three
Violence has once again erupted in Ukhrul district of Manipur. Three people have been reported killed in two separate incidents of firing. There was already ethnic tension in the state between the Meitei and Kuki communities, and now Ukhrul is also witnessing violence between the Naga and Kuki communities.
According to police, heavy firing took place between armed groups of Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities near Sinakeithei village in Ukhrul district. The peaceful atmosphere of the area has become completely tense due to this violent clash. In this encounter, 29-year-old Tangkhul youth Horshokmi Jamang, a resident of Chatrik Khulen village of Kamjong district, was killed. Three civilians have also been injured in this incident, who have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
Naga organization Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has alleged that the unrest in the area has increased due to the activities of Kuki militants under Operation Suspension (SoO). The organization claims that Kuki militants attacked Naga village guards during patrolling.
Soon after the first incident, there was again firing in nearby Mullam village. Mullam is a Kuki dominated village. The two killed in the encounter have been identified as Letlal Sitalho (James Kuki) and Paominlun Haolao (Hitelal Kuki), residents of Kangpokpi district.
Mullam village administration alleged that Tangkhul militants attacked their village around 5:30 am on Friday. The Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust has strongly condemned the incident and claimed that houses were also set on fire in Mullam and Songphal villages.
Ukhrul district is mainly a Tangkhul Naga dominated area. Tension has been increasing between the Tangkhul and Kuki communities since February 2026. Last week, two Tangkhul men were killed in a terrorist attack in Ukhrul, and a shooting incident was also reported in Sinakeithei on the same day.
In view of the tense situation, additional security forces have been deployed in the area. The police and the district administration are trying to control the situation, but the growing distrust between different communities is becoming a major obstacle in restoring peace.
