On Trump’s request, Munir-Sharif are trying to convince Iran, this is Pakistan’s plan!
New Delhi: Islamabad has become an important platform for US-Iran peace talks. US envoy left for Pakistan’s capital on Saturday to start a new round of peace talks with Iran. Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are arriving in Islamabad.
The White House said they would hold face-to-face talks with Iranian representatives. The Iranian delegation reached Islamabad late on Friday night. The team includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam and Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baqai.
Met with Asim Munir
Let us tell you that Abbas Araghchi along with his team met Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Munir is playing an important role in the mediation efforts. The Tehran Embassy released a short video of the two, but did not provide details of the conversation.
It is believed that Iran has conveyed its conditions to Munir. This was Araghchi’s first meeting after reaching Islamabad. Pakistan Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi and other officials were also present in the meeting. Araghchi is also scheduled to meet Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
After this the Iranian delegation also met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister’s Office said both sides were discussing the ‘regional situation’. A Pakistani source told Reuters that Araghchi had informed Pakistani officials of Tehran’s demands for talks and its objections to US demands.
A direct discussion can happen on Monday!
It is noteworthy that now everything depends on whether Pakistan is able to convince the Foreign Minister of Iran or not. After the meeting with Shahbaz Sharif, the picture will be clear by late Saturday evening. Araghchi will leave for Moscow from Islamabad tonight. If things work out, he can return to Islamabad for direct US-Iran talks on Monday (04 May 2026).
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner can reach Islamabad any time on Sunday. Here he will talk to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir. The entire outline depends on the final decision of Iran’s Foreign Minister. Hopefully talks will take place on Monday.
