Swiss Air Flight Catches Fire At Delhi Airport 4 Passengers Injured During Emergency Evacuation
An emergency evacuation was carried out at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after smoke and flames were seen in the engine of a Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) Zurich-bound flight in the early hours of Sunday (April 26). At least four passengers have been injured in this incident.
According to the airline, flight LX 147 (Delhi-Zurich) was preparing to take off when smoke was seen coming from a part of the landing gear. Soon after, full emergency was declared at the airport at around 2 am and several fire tenders were sent to the spot.
It is reported that a total of 232 passengers and 13 crew members were on board the plane. The aircraft concerned was of the Airbus A330-343 model. The airport management said in its statement that the passengers were evacuated safely following all prescribed security protocols and airport operations remained normal.
Elaborating further, an airline spokesperson said, “Soon after takeoff, at around 1:00 a.m. IST, an engine problem occurred. The crew refused to take off and, after assessing the situation, decided to evacuate the aircraft as a precautionary measure.”
He further said, “All passengers and crew exited the aircraft through the emergency slides. Six passengers are currently undergoing medical evaluation. Stairs were provided for some people who could not use the slides.”
Six passengers sustained minor injuries during the emergency evacuation and have been taken for medical examination. At the same time, stairs were arranged for some passengers who could not use the emergency slide. The airline also informed that a team of technical experts from Switzerland will reach Delhi, which will conduct a detailed examination of the aircraft and decide the further action.
