Bridge Collapses During Religious Procession In Karnataka, Eight Injured

Bengaluru: At least eight people were injured after a bridge collapsed during a religious procession near Moodbidri in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, officials said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Bavada Bailu in Pucchemogaru village during a Dharmanema ceremony, when devotees were carrying sacred ritual items on a palanquin as part of a traditional procession.

A band troupe accompanying the procession had crossed the bridge moments earlier without any trouble. However, the structure gave way as the group carrying the palanquin stepped onto it, reported India Today.

Stones and concrete beams fell onto the devotees.

Local residents rushed to the spot and helped rescue those trapped. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment.
