BJP’s dominance continues in Gujarat local body elections
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has again proved its strong dominance in both urban and rural areas by registering a comprehensive victory in the local body elections of Gujarat. In the election results, the party won a huge majority in most of the municipal corporations, municipalities and panchayats, while Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were left far behind.
In Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (192 seats), BJP took a clear lead by winning 158 seats, while Congress was reduced to 22 seats. BJP’s dominance continued in Surat also, where 115 out of 120 seats went to the party’s account. AAP got only 4 seats and Congress got 1 seat, which marks a decline compared to AAP’s previous performance.
In Rajkot (72 seats), BJP won 65 seats, while Congress got 7 seats and AAP could not even open its account. In Vadodara (76 seats), BJP won 69 seats, Congress got 6 seats. In Bhavnagar (52 seats), BJP won 44 seats, while Congress was limited to 8 seats.
In Karamsad-Anand (52 seats), BJP got 43 seats, Congress got 8 and one seat went to an independent. In Gandhidham, BJP won 41 seats, while Congress got 11 seats. BJP made almost clean sweep in cities like Nadiad and Navsari. BJP won 51 out of 52 seats in Nadiad and 50 seats in Navsari.
In Porbandar and Morbi, BJP won all 52 seats-52. In Surendranagar also, the party took a huge lead by winning 51 out of 52 seats.
In Mehsana, BJP won 47 seats and Congress won 5 seats. In Vapi, BJP got 37 seats, Congress got 11 seats and Independents got 4 seats. In Jamnagar, BJP won 54 seats, while Congress and AAP got 2 seats each.
Of the 2,030 seats in 84 municipalities, BJP won 1,791 seats. Congress got 414 seats and others got 144 seats. Of the 1,090 seats in 34 district panchayats, BJP won 568 seats, while Congress won 77 and others 30 seats. Of the 5,234 seats in 260 taluka panchayats, BJP won 2,397 seats, Congress won 591 and others won 329 seats.
These results are being considered as a sign of BJP’s strong organizational hold in Gujarat and its activism at the grassroots level. The limited performance of Congress and AAP reflects the growing differences in the politics of the state.
