Event Details:

When Mussolini was on his way to Switzerland on April 27, Italian rebels recognized him in the village of Dongo, near Lake Como, and after capturing him, executed him and some of his associates at Giulino di Mezzegra on April 28. The next day, a mob of persecuted people in Milan hanged Mussolini’s body by its feet in the same place where he had started the fascist movement 25 years earlier. After doing this, the people there breathed a sigh of freedom and celebrated.

According to Aurelio Lampredi, an eminent Italian automobile and aircraft engine designer, Mussolini’s last words were, “Aim for my heart.” Mussolini did not say anything immediately before or during his execution. According to Italian sources, Mussolini’s body was brought to Piazzale Loreto in downtown Milan, where a large number of people gathered to express their reaction to the end of the fascist regime. It was at this very place that public anger against the decades-old dictatorial rule was witnessed through protests and demonstrations.

Experts believe that the fall of Mussolini was a defining moment in the end of fascism in Europe. This incident dealt a deep blow to the morale of the Axis powers in the final stages of World War II and was also a turning point towards the restoration of democracy in Italy. A reporter at the time commented that “Today’s event marks not only the end of a man, but also the decline of the ideology that had held Italy under its control for years.”
