Sudan Condition: According to a United Nations report, South Sudan Nearly 80 lakh people in India are facing the threat of severe hunger. The already poor humanitarian situation has worsened due to conflict and displacement.
The report released on Tuesday warned that 7.8 million people will face severe food insecurity in the coming months, which is about 56 percent of the country’s total population.
What did the organizations say about the food crisis in Sudan?
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have appealed to the international community to take immediate action. He has described it as “such a humanitarian disaster”, which if not stopped now, the situation can go completely out of control.
Malnutrition spreading rapidly among children?
The report said that in the last six months, cases of malnutrition among children aged six months to five years have increased by 1 lakh and now this number has reached 22 lakh. Of these, there are about 7 lakh children whose lives are in serious danger.
What caused the food crisis in Sudan?
Due to the ongoing conflict in South Sudan, many nutrition services have been closed or affected, leading to a rise in cases of malnutrition. Apart from this, due to lack of essential goods and adequate funding, even life-saving treatment is not reaching people. Sudan has been at war for many years. There is a continuous war going on with the Sudanese Armed Forces – SAF and a paramilitary force called Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

South Sudan gained independence by separating from Sudan after a referendum in 2011. The deteriorating economic condition of the country has further worsened the situation. South Sudan remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
How many people lost their lives?
Despite the peace agreement signed in 2018, in which about 4 lakh people lost their lives, now tension is increasing again. In recent months, clashes between the government army, the South Sudan People’s Defense Force, and opposition groups have intensified.
This tension is due to the long-running dispute between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and suspended Vice President Riek Machar. Machar is facing trial in Juba on charges of murder, treason and crimes against humanity, all of which he has denied.
