Strict surveillance with 2,291 CCTV cameras near Pakistan border
Punjab Police has further strengthened the security along the international border with Pakistan by installing a total of 2,291 CCTV cameras at 585 locations. It is being developed as the “second line of security” of the state, under which strict surveillance is being maintained on sensitive villages and important routes. This initiative is being run under the Gangsteron Se War campaign, which aims to break the supply chains of organized crime networks operating across the border.
While the Border Security Force (BSF) guards the international border, the Punjab Police is working to prevent any smuggling from taking place within the state. Even if any illegal goods enter through the border, this system is active to prevent it from spreading further in the state.
According to the police, 41 police stations in the border districts have been connected to this CCTV network, which has further strengthened the capacity for surveillance and quick action. State checkposts have been made more effective and unpredictable. Now vehicle checking is no longer just a formal process but is being done in a targeted manner on the basis of intelligence. Anti-drone surveillance has also been increased in view of the increasing incidents of weapons and narcotics being dropped through drones in the border areas.
Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police Suhail Qasim Mir said that the second line of security is extremely important to effectively break the chain of crime. He said that if there is any infiltration on the border, the police can immediately stop it in their area. Besides, village level security committees and local networks have also been linked to this system, so that any suspicious activity can be identified immediately.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said strengthening the “second line of security” is an important part of the state’s anti-gangster strategy. He says the aim is to dismantle the entire criminal network from cross border supply to final distribution. He clarified that smuggling or any criminal attempt will be detected and neutralized at the initial stage itself.
