West Bengal Elections: Violence and vandalism during the last phase of voting, Mamata Banerjee took to the streets
Kolkata, 29 April. In the initial hours of voting for the second and final phase of West Bengal Assembly elections, reports of violence, vandalism and uproar have emerged from many parts of the state on Wednesday. According to officials, complaints of violence and vandalism have been received from many places including Chapra, Shantipur, Nimtala and Bhangar.
BJP and TMC blame each other
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders alleged that a BJP polling agent was attacked by miscreants belonging to Trinamool Congress at booth number 53 in Chapra in Nadia district. Meanwhile, ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of hooliganism. He alleged that many TMC leaders have been arrested in the overnight crackdown.
61.11% voting till 1 pm amid rain
Meanwhile, during the ongoing voting amid unprecedented security arrangements on 142 seats in seven districts of South Bengal – Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia and Purba Bardhaman, interference of rain was also seen in many areas. At present, people were seen standing in long queues at the polling stations, waiting for their votes. In this sequence, 61.11 percent voting was recorded till 1 pm. Till 11 am, 39.97 percent voting was recorded.

BJP candidate’s agent attacked in Nadia
The injured person in Nadia, identified as Musharraf Mir, has been admitted to a local hospital, a senior police officer said. BJP candidate Saikat Sarkar said that the incident took place after the mock poll started. He said Trinamool supporters stopped the BJP agent and hit him on the head, injuring him. A complaint has been lodged in the local police station in this regard, although Trinamool has denied the allegations.
According to the police, the BJP camp office located in Ward No. 16 in Shantipur was vandalized on Wednesday morning. Furniture was broken there, due to which tension spread in the area.
Allegation of stopping ISF agent in South 24 Parganas
There were allegations that an agent of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) was stopped from entering a polling booth in Bhangarh in South 24 Parganas district, leading to unrest. ISF leader Arabul Islam claimed that agents’ forms were being snatched and they were being thrown out…women were not being allowed to vote. We deployed agents so that everyone could vote.
Mamta Banerjee’s brother made allegations
The police warned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brother Kartik Banerjee and Trinamool workers who had gathered near a polling booth. Officials said gathering of more than four people at one place is not allowed. On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh Police officer Ajay Pal Sharma was seen patrolling with the convoy in Falta area of South 24 Parganas district since morning. There has been heavy deployment of central forces in Diamond Harbor and Falta. Rapid Action Force (RAF) contingents have also been deployed to maintain law and order.
